Transitions

What does a good transition look like? Every good transition requires two important factors: The existing leader must let go and the new leader must take charge. It is much like John the Baptist’s words, “He must increase and I must decrease” (I hope that isn’t taken wrong).

Many of you know we have a transition coming in the Pacific Conference as I finish my time as Superintendent. My desire is to make this transition as positive as possible for Brian as well as the Conference. Let me know if or when I miss something or do something that misses that mark.

Here are some things I think you should know as we begin the transition.

  1. Brian starts full time November 1st, 2022. However, as “Superintendent-Elect” I’ve encouraged him to begin planning and connecting with others. Realize that, even now, as he initiates things and begins making decisions, he has my backing.
  1. Brian and I have already been communicating together. We have set apart a half day this week to work through details and upcoming events. We are scheduling regular meetings together from now until Annual Conference.
  2. Sweet Home starts its transition now. Yesterday, I had my initial meeting with their Pastor Parish. At this point we are planning for an Interim Pastor. As always, I encourage the leadership to start with a fresh “ministry description” for their pastor as well as establishing a clear budget. Brian is working alongside me with the appointment of a new pastor.
  1. Linda and I are taking vacation time. This will be a quasi working vacation for me as I will continue to meet with Boards, church leaders, and others as needed. However, please contact Nancy as she has the list of people and resources available while I’m gone.
  1.  No more Conference blog (however). I’m taking a break from blogging, but I may write a few before Annual Conference. However, I’m starting a new ministry called “Ascent Pathways.” I hope to start up a new blog post for that. This ministry will involve several things, including coaching, assessments, team building, and pulpit supply.

Transitions can be hard–very few of us like change. But I believe we can walk well through these days with unity and health if we are intentional and more importantly prayerful. Let’s continue to pray for Superintendent Elect Brian, for the Sweet Home Church, and for the pastors and leaders of the Pacific Conference. Let’s pull together, pray, and watch how God works.

Thank you for keeping us in the know.

I have appreciated these blogs so much. I have not always commented but have read and appreciated them each week.

Thank you for serving as Conference Superintendent and all that you have done for the Conference. Thank to Linda for supporting you in that role.

We will pray for Brian and Donalyn in this transition time. And for Sweet Home as change is made.

It has been a pleasure and an honor to serve a church under you as my superintendent. We look forward to the future and are thankful for the past. Faithful men of God, filled with the Holy Spirit, working to discern the way forward for an often times rebellious people. Thank you for serving faithfully! It means a lot!
