Five Things Every Leader Should Be Saying

Words matter. What we say has more impact than we think. Ephesians 4:29 says, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” So whether it’s the words you say to leaders, your conversation with guests, the phrases you use with family, or the way you talk to yourself, every word carries weight.

LET’S TALK

Here are five simple phrases every leader should be saying more often.

1. Thank you!
No one gets tired of being thanked. Leaders should never take others for granted. In fact, that’s a sure way to demoralize and disengage leaders. Offering genuine gratitude could be the tipping point for volunteers staying and engaging towards new growth or leaving with anger or disappointment.

2. How can I help you?
Too many so called leaders are only interested in how others can help them. However, we are called to serve others. Godly leaders genuinely love people and want to build into their lives. They want others to be the “heroes” rather than being a hero themselves.

3. What do you think?
Leaders should long for input. Seek the counsel of those around. After all, we should never think because we “said it” it will be accepted. Leadership is collaborative. Buy in can only happen as we work together.

4. You are needed!
One of the most powerful word pictures of Christ’s church is that it is a body. Each part is significant. Everyone matters. A good leader includes not excludes. He or she helps others see where they fit and how they can use their gifts and abilities.

5. How can we improve?
Be humble and teachable. Realize that there is always room for improvement. I believe we can never stand still and rest on our laurels. We are either moving forward or backward.  Everything can be better, including the leader.

BEFORE YOU GO

Thanks Superintendent for a very good conference and then these comments. I am reading Ralph Enlow’s Servant Of All. Very practical as he discusses false ideas of leadership and the greatness of servant leadership. He is the president of the Association for Biblical Higher Education and was provost at Columbia International University.
