Like many of you, I spent most of last night watching the election results. Wow!  Was I ever surprised that Donald Trump was elected (I know some of you were not!).  In fact, I wrote this blog assuming that Hillary Clinton would win.

No matter who you voted for, one can’t help but be frustrated and disappointed in the political process and behavior of the candidates. Someone said that this election was like God holding up a mirror to our nation saying “Look at yourself!”

God is showing us who we are as a nation. We may not like what we see, but the two major party candidates represented us well. Lies, corruption, selfishness, unbridled ambition, shameless sexual immorality — all committed with a high hand. That’s our nation! (Joe Rigney)

Even the time and expense of the election process is bothersome. Many of you know I grew up in Canada. They limit spending and the time period for elections. Sounds like a good idea for us to consider in the States, don’t you think?

LET’S TALK…

Okay, I’m whining. So, now that the elections are over, here are few things I feel I need to remember and reflect on.

1. Reach out to those who disagree. We have become a divided nation. One survey said that 1 out 14 people have lost close friends because of differences during this past political cycle.  Remember God is neither Republican nor Democrat. I must demonstrate grace and love in a fractured world.
2. Pray for our government. As Christians, we are called to lift up our leaders and government in prayer. To be honest I haven’t done that very well and I am committed to pray for President Trump and our other political leaders (1 Tim 2:1-4).
3. Remember that Jesus is our hope, not politics.   Perseverating over politics exposes a false hope. Jesus is our ultimate hope! The Bible says that he alone is the King of kings and Lord of lords (1 Timothy 6:15). I need to lean into Him and trust Him more.
4. Keep on mission. The mission is the same…to make disciples. We have the best news, the Good News to share with others. God loves this world and wants everyone to come to know Him. I need to always remember that He alone can change hearts, not laws or legislation (Matthew 28:19-20).

As Christians,  we should always remember that this world is not our final home. God’s kingdom remains undaunted and we must continue to seek His will, that it will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
